Drop Boxes for Students

Introduction

There are a variety of options for uploading assignments into Turnitin. One option is to zip and upload an ANGEL drop box into Turnitin. Some faculty members have found that uploading a zipped ANGEL drop box to be somewhat messy due to the extra files ANGEL adds during the zipping process. To help alleviate this problem, IST has developed a tool called "LitterBox" that removes the extra files from the ANGEL zip file. The zip files can then be re-zipped and uploaded into Turnitin. The beta version of LitterBox is currently available for use.

LitterBox Cleaning Tool Instructions

1. Before installing the LitterBox application, you will need to first install Adobe Runtime. You can download Adobe Runtime by visiting http://get.adobe.com/air and following the installation instructions.

2. You can download the LitterBox tool by going to LitterBox.

3. Then, follow the LitterBox installation instructions. It will ask you if you trust the source. Click Okay.

4. After you complete the installation process, place the zip file to be "cleaned" on the Desktop.

5. Open the LitterBox cleaning tool and follow the instructions.

6. Once the file cleaning is completed, you will need to re-zip the file before uploading to Turnitin.

7. Upload the zipped file into Turnitin.

Note: For additional information on the LitterBox tool, please review the README.txt file included in the downloading of the application. The LitterBox tool is still in its beta phase, and IST would appreciate your feedback. If you have any questions or feedback about the tool, please send email to jad52@psu.edu.

General Tips for Uploading Drop Boxes to Turnitin

You may want to ask students to follow a specific naming convention for each file they submit to the ANGEL drop box. By having students include their names in the title of their files, it will make it easier for the instructor to match the name of the file to the student.

When downloading the files in an ANGEL drop box, three additional files are created: title.htm, list.htm, and grade.htm. When submitting the files to Turnitin, uncheck the boxes next to these three files to avoid uploading these files along with the papers.

When uploading an ANGEL drop box into Turnitin, Turnitin may reject a particularly large file contained within the ANGEL drop box. If this should occur, you will need to re-submit the rejected file by itself using another Turnitin submission method such as copy and paste. You will not need to re-submit the entire zipped ANGEL drop box again.
