In-class labs

Effective but can be supplemented.

Online simulations, tutorials, lessons - already built, peer-reviewed, free for your use

Higher education discipline-based collections:

Recitation sessions.

Many don't attend, some students dominate, questions or problems may be too narrow.

In a computer lab

  • Have students solve problems individually or in teams.
  • Use Web-based commercial software.

See Building Blocks for Teams.

Use professional academic resource sites in your discipline.

See higher education collections above.

Homework handed in and checked.

Too much to check. Doesn't build student responsibility.

Submit problems via the web.

Provide problem solutions on the Web. Make the solution available after the due time. Let students check their own work. Use periodic online quizzes to help push students to do homework.

ANGEL Help - Message board (discussion)

ANGEL Help - Low stakes quizzes with a deadline.

Students propose critical issues by e-mail or in class.

Difficult to include all students equitably.

Require that students submit one critical issue to the class (or small group) for discussion. Or rotate among students or student teams.

Require that each student respond once (only once) to an issue raised by another student.

ANGEL Help - Drop box with peer review, Message board

ANGEL Help - two-person teams or more, drop box with peer review assigned to each team

Faculty propose issues; students respond

Depth of thinking often is limited by time constraints.

Have students take on leadership roles within the class or in teams - propose issues, lead discussions, do class presentations in person and as online lessons.

Use Building Blocks for Teams to guide you.
