How can I make sure students teams stay on track?

For larger scale group assignments, it is important to establish infrastructure for student teams whenever possible. These tips not only help students suceeed in their projects, but can also help you identify potentially problematic teams earlier in the course. Some options include:

  1. Establish a series of due dates for all stages of a project, such as a proposal, first drafts and other intermediate materials. This will help teams not wait until the last minute and identify group or logistical problems earlier.

  2. Require teams to submit or post meeting notes. These should be periodically reviewed by the instructor throughout the project, even if he or she does not make any replies.

  3. Require frequent progress reports or drafts from teams.

  4. Require students to fill out individual peer evaluations and team evaluatons. This is another way you may be able to identify problems earlier as well as provide a way to assign individual grades.
