Constructing One-Minute Essay Questions

One-minute question protocol

  • One-minute essay questions can be any type of question.
  • If asking a true/false or short answer question, require that a reason be provided for choosing the answer.
  • If asking an opinion, require a logical reason for the opinion.
  • If using a compare-contrast question, make sure that you provide guidelines that will focus student answers.

One-minute question management

  • For ease in reviewing the outcomes, require that students write bulleted phrases instead of sentences and paragraphs.
  • Limit the number of words in responses.
  • Collect (or review) responses from only part of the class at one time.
