One of the more effective uses of the Internet is post sources of easily-accessible reference materials. Some of these can be linked onto your Web site.

Bibiographies and Links

Providing a basic set of citations and links helps students quickly find appropriate resources anytime, anywhere. Below are samples ranging from simple to complex.

Albanian Linguistics Bibliography - Basic HTML bibliography on Albanian language and linguistics with links to selected resources.

Appalachian Studies Bibliography (1994-1990) - Extensive bibliography of Appalachian Studies sorted by topic.

Jurist World Law Page - Links to constitutions and other legal documentation for countries around the world. Notice that the multi-column layout compacts the list.

The Quilt Index - Image database of historical quilts. Consolidates quilt archives from Michigan, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee.

BBC Echoes of Africa Music - A tutorial on African music, sorted by region, instrument type and. Includes many audio samples.

American Ballet Theater Online Dictionary - Glossary of ballet terms including video or photos of different positions and moves.

Franklin University American Arts Timeline - Interactive Flash timeline. Move the bottom cursor to an approximate date to see different literary, music and artistic works. Works are classified into "elite" and "popular." Includes audio and video samples.

Monticello Explorer - Explore the house, domestic life and the grounds using Flash, video and 3D visualization.

Curating the City: Wilshire Boulevard - You can zoom in on different parts on one of Los Angeles's primary roads or you can submit your own story about Wilshire Boulevard.

UCLA Manas - India and its Neighbors - Site which explains some of the basic concepts of the culture of India from religion and festivals to Indian cinema and literature.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Timeline of Art History - View art images and information from around the world for various time periods. Covers 20,000 B.C. - 1800 A.D. (later periods on development).

B.B.C. Religions Encyclopedia - Good basic descriptions of many religions including religions of Asia and modern Paganism.

Law in Mexico Before the Conquest - An examination of the Aztec and Mayan legal codes based on original documents. From the University of Texas Tarlton Law Library.

Numbers in 4,500 Languages - Look up numbers 1-10 for over 4,000 languages. Search by region or language family.

Interdisciplinary Studies

These are Web sites which focus on a narrow topic, but cover it from a variety of angles.

Alexander Romonov Palace - Another reference devoted to a small topic, in this case the Alexander Palace in Russia. The site includes images, floorplans, dining customs, links and more.

University of New South Wales Music Acoustics - A Web site exploring the acoustic properties of different instruments and vocalists. Includes audio samples.

Life in the U.S.A. - A "how-to" site on American culture aimed for immigrants, visiting students or tourists. It's an interesting example of what kinds of information or customs are taken for granted.
