Step 4 - Upload

Once your media files have been encoded, they need to be transferred to our video servers in a process referred to as uploading. Prior to uploading, however, you must request an account. Faculty who would like to get a streaming server account free of charge can get one automatically be using the Login link above. If you are listed as an instructor of record in LDAP, you will receive an account. Others may request one by emailing accounts@psu.edu. Departmental accounts can be applied for by following this link: http://css.its.psu.edu/accounts/dept.html and filling out the ITS For-Fee Services Request Form. Please specify "Streaming Server Account" on the form where it says "Description for this account". Please note also that although details have not been worked out yet, there will be a nominal charge for departmental accounts.

When you are given an account on the streaming server, you will be able to use the Login link above to log in to your streaming web space. After logging in, you will be able to upload new video/audio files by clicking the Upload Movie link.

When you click the Upload Movie link you'll see the following screen where you will use the Choose File button to locate your movie on your computer to upload. You must then check the box that indicates that you have read and are abiding by the TEACH Act for fair use of this media. Not checking the box will prevent you from uploading. A link is provided if you want more information on the TEACH Act. You must also give your movie a descriptive name, which can be different from the file name, and give your movie a brief description as to its content as well. Click the Upload Movie button to upload your movie, noting that there is a 1 GB file size limit for uploading.

Upon successful upload of your movie, you will be given the opportunity to set the permissions for the movie to limit access. By default, you will be the only one permitted to view the movie. You may also select the Return to My Movies button and set permissions at a later time. With this version of the streaming server interface, you can set the same permissions for multiple files at once, so you may want to wait and set the permissions altogether once everthing is uploaded.

Setting Permissions - View a video of how to set and remove permissions.

Media that you do not have copyright permission for but falls under Fair Use guidelines can be uploaded, however, you will need to specify which course it will be available to and as many sections of that course it should be available to. Access to these videos will be removed at the end of each semester to comply with TEACH Act guidelines. By default, all streaming media permissions are set to be viewable only by the owner (you). You will need to set the permissions for each movie you upload so your intended audience can view it. Click the Manage Movies link. The Manage Movies page shows you a list of all of your uploaded movies and allows you to Rename, Delete, or Change Permissions by clicking the appropriate button next to the video name. You may apply the same action to multiple videos at once by clicking the checkbox next to the video and choosing which action to perform on them from the pulldown menu at the bottom of the page.

To set permissions, click the checkbox next to each video for which you would like to change permissions. Choose Change Permissions from the pulldown menu at the bottom of the page and click the Submit button. On the ensuing page, you will see the list of videos and the current permissions. If permissions are different for each video, you may not see the current permissions listed. To change the permissions, select which audience can view your movie from the Choose Permission pulldown menu, then click the Apply Permissions button.

To set permissions for a course, choose "Selected Courses & User IDs" from the Choose Permission pulldown menu and Apply Permissions at the bottom. The screen should change. There will be a list of courses that you are teaching this semester. Choose each course you would like the file to be available to, then click the Add Course button next to the list. The course will be added to the Pending Permissions list on the right. If the semester is not yet active, you will not see your courses listed. To add a course that is not on the list, choose the campus location for the course from the pulldown menu, then enter the course code and sections in the spaces next to the campus pulldown menu and click the Add Course button for each course. When you are done adding courses, click the Apply Permissions button at the bottom of the screen. Note that you must first populate the Pending Permissions que on the right with the course permissions you want set, then click the Apply Permissions button at the bottom of the page. Failure to do either will prevent your permissions from being set.

You may set individual user IDs in the same manner by typing them into the Additional User IDs field, clicking the Add User IDs button to move them to the que on the right, then clicking the Apply Permissions button when you are finished adding user IDs to the que.

A confirmation screen will let you know if your permissions were successfully set. You may also get a warning that the course is not listed in the database. This may occur if the course is not currently being offered. If so, you may proceed with setting the permissions.
