Anyone interested in the use of games in education is invited to attend a free educational gaming brown bag on "Amazing Race to Geographic Literacy" on Wednesday, January 25 from noon to 1:00 p.m. Participants can attend in person in 202K Rider Building, University Park or via a Meeting@Penn State desktop videoconference.
Associate professor of earth science Laura Guertin will discuss the Amazing Race game codeveloped with the Educational Gaming Commons. Using a Google Earth API, the game gives students a location and asks them to click on the closest location on the map for points. By presenting a Google Earth interface, it allows students to begin to learn specific locations and understand their geographic relationship. Participants can learn how to promote geographic literacy through games and discuss other areas of higher education where geographic literacy is critical and how games could enhance learning geographic skills.
The event is the first in a series of spring brown bags to take place the third Wednesday of each month, hosted by Information Technology Services.
