Jim Groom Visits Penn State
Educational technology innovator Jim Groom to speak at Paterno Library Sept. 20
Faculty, staff, and students interested in the innovative and cutting edge use of educational technology are invited to attend a talk by Jim Groom, instructional technology specialist and adjunct professor at the University of Mary Washington, Sept. 20 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Foster Auditorium in 102 Paterno Library.
Groom is known as an innovator in educational technology and a dynamic speaker. He developed the internationally recognized academic blogging platform at University of Mary Washington. This platform has been used to create class sites, e-portfolios and other web-based resources ranging from English, linguistics and speech blogs to online literary journals. He made news in the higher education world after he coined the term “edupunk” in 2008 and has more recently been exploring radically open course design in DS106, a free, open, online digital storytelling course.
Among the events Groom has presented at include EDUCAUSE’s national conference, South by Southwest (SXSW) and the Instructional Technology Council’s annual conference. During his talk at Foster Auditorium, he will discuss the blogging platform he developed, the DS106 course, and various other ideas regarding open education and technology.
