BuzzLion for Week of November 13
This week: HTML5 game engine, UCS tips, Learning Design Community Meeting, Sloan C
Let's start this week's BuzzLion with Zac Zidik, multimedia specialist with Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT), who does a lot of game development work with the Educational Gaming Commons. Zac has a blog post this week that deals with something Zac at first didn't think was possible - creating a game engine in HTML5:
"I didn't think it could be done. But here it is. Virtually the same code that I used to program the Flash version of this, tweaked a bit for JavaScript, and drawing to an HTML5 Canvas. It uses the same XML that is generated by the Flash editor."
Next, we have two posts on the new University Collaboration System (UCS) being rolled out at Penn State. First, Ken Layng, TLT training specialist, has a post on how to organize and find calendar and messages in UCS.
"Ordinarily, to find a group of related messages, you will sort a column, and scroll until you find the first related message. Alternatively, you might search for messages with specific criteria. However, in these cases, some of the messages that you want to have returned nay be prove elusive in your search results. Some people may respond to your original post, others may copy you on a new thread. This makes defining criteria for a search very difficult. Tags in UCS address this."
Next, if you are trying to set up a meeting using UCS, you might want to check out a post by Ryan Johnson, IT Trainer with University Libraries, that will help you find meeting rooms.
"Meeting locations appear differently in UCS. Locations appear by Building, Room then Campus."
Next, Jeff Swain, TLT instructional designer, shares notes and slides the Learning Design Community Hub Meeting on Nov. 4.
"A lot has been happening across the university to improve the teaching & learning experience for all of our students."
Elizabeth Pyatt, TLT instructional designer, ends this week's BuzzLion with her report on the Sloan C Conference.
"Sloan-C is a huge conference and I got a chance to view presentations on a number of topics. I did find a few recurring themes though."
That's it for this week's edition of BuzzLion. Thanks for reading!
