BuzzLion for Week of August 29
Cognitive biking, stylesheets, find your IP address, gaming brownbags, Media Commons Tailgate
We start off this week's BuzzLion with a look at "cognitive biking" a riff by Brad Kozlek, programming manager with Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) on the famous quote by Steve Jobs that "computers are like bicycles for the mind."
"If a computer is a bicycle for the mind, is a curriculum that does not recognize the role of electronic devices in cognition like training a student to run the Tour de France on foot?"
Next we have part four of a series on print stylesheets and html5, xtml, and epub by Dave Stong, graphic designer with TLT.
"In theory, the lawbook html 5 web page would be one chapter in a series of inter-linked pages. I put the global navigation—the contents—above the H1 title of the page. I'm not absolutely sure about that but for print, I'm relatively sure it's wrong. I'm also sure that if it was printed I wouldn't need to include links to the previous and next chapters, nor would I need to display a video. To deal with those differences I dropped in a print stylesheet."
The IT guy asks you for your IP address when he's helping you troubleshoot a problem - but how the heck do I find it? No worries, as Ryan Johnson, TLT training specialist, has the answer on how to find your IP address this week in the Technology Training Community.
"Sometimes when troubleshooting internet and networking problems with your computer, being able to find your IP Address can be very beneficial. Here is how you can find it on both a Mac and Windows Computer."
We end with two event announcements. First off is a post by Elizabeth Pyatt, instructional designer with TLT, on the resumption of a series of gaming brownbags put on by the Educational Gaming Commons, to be held Sept. 21 at the Rider Bldg or via Adobe Connect.
"This semester, the Educational Gaming Commons will resume its series of luncheon brownbags, now on the 3rd Wednesdays of the month. The first luncheon features a demonstration of Typo!, a game that reinforces writing skills and a discussion of other word games. Instructor Bim Angst from Schuylkill will discuss her multiple semesters of experience with Typo as a practice tool for students learning proofing."
The other announcement is regarding the Media Commons Tailgate, to be held Nov. 5 at Foster Auditorium. Nick Smerker, TLT multimedia specialist, has the details.
"The Media Commons Tailgate is a highly interactive, one-day event focused on exploring the possibilities for digital media in teaching and learning. This year's theme will be "Envisioning Learning Spaces for Tomorrow's Students" and attendees will have an opportunity to creatively explore the role of new media and gaming in our future classrooms."
That's all for this week. Thanks for reading!
