Symposium 2009

Highlights from the 2009 Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology

The 2009 Penn State Symposium for Teaching and Learning with Technology was held April 17–18, 2009 on the University Park Campus. On April 17, David Wiley, keynote speaker for the Symposium, met with invited Penn State administrators and faculty in the afternoon to discuss how open educational resources can be used to maximize the availability and increase the quality of the learning experience. Concurrently, the Digital Commons held a seminar on digital storytelling and the Educational Gaming Commons conducted on-campus geocaching and alternate reality gaming activities.

On April 18, the Symposium was held at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. The full conference agenda included an excellent keynote speaker and featured speaker, 27 concurrent sessions, a gaming demonstration room, a hands-on learning room, and a poster plus session with 17 posters, many of them supported with additional multimedia. The lunchtime featured speaker, danah boyd, gave an insightful talk to the 391 attendees that examined the online behaviors of teenagers in social environments such as MySpace and Facebook.  The “meta-conference” activities included blog posts, Twitter conversations, audio and video interviews, and community-based video and photo sharing.

Members of the Penn State community are encouraged to continue to visit the Symposium Web site, where recordings of the sessions and reflections on the themes of the event will be posted.
