The Educational Gaming Commons (EGC) has been around for several years now, introducing the concept of games for learning to an increasing amount of Penn State faculty members. Because of this, the EGC web site also was expanding as more and more content was added.

Classroom and Lab Computing (CLC) is offering a new service, Remote Applications. Currently in the pilot stage, the service enables faculty, staff, and students to access a variety of software via Windows Terminal Servers. This allows them to use software that they do not have on their computer without having to download large software files.

Many may assume that due to technology’s quick and steady rise, library attendance is headed for a swoon. In fact, it’s been widely documented that numerous public libraries across the country have been forced to shorten hours of operation or close down completely. Thankfully, this is not the case at Penn State’s University Park libraries. “Our gate counts are increasing,” says Emily Rimland, information literacy librarian at University Park. “More students are coming to the library than ever.” In fact, over the last year University Park libraries have hosted over 3.3 million visitors.

The College of the Liberal Arts has a section on their Undergraduate Studies website designed to facilitate a conversation between students, faculty, and staff about education in the liberal arts at Penn State. “Liberal Arts Voices is a bi-weekly podcast produced by the Liberal Arts Undergraduate Studies office. In each podcast, we hope to bring on guests who can speak to the undergraduate experience in the College of the Liberal Arts,” stated Christopher Long, associate dean for undergraduate education for the College of the Liberal Arts.

The College of Education teamed with the Penn State Arboretum during Arbor Day last April to help fourth grade students from three local schools, Park Forest Elementary School, Grays Woods Elementary School, and Radio Park Elementary School, explore tree and plant science. Using iPads and iPods, the students became “Tree Investigators,” exploring and learning about trees at the Arboretum.
